Airfield Quarry Update – August 2026
Following the grant of planning permission in September 2024, Hills Quarry Products Ltd (HQP) has continued to progress the various enabling works and regulatory approvals required prior to the commencement of mineral extraction operations.
Since the last update, significant progress has been made across the site. Overburden removal works within the plant site and silt management area have been completed, alongside the statutory archaeological investigations. This has allowed for the ongoing development of infrastructure associated with both areas. Topsoil and subsoil materials continue to be stored within dedicated soil bunds across the site for future restoration and screening purposes.
The location of the original proposed access route has moved to approximately 700m further east along the C124. The new location utilises an existing entrance, minimising the works required to make it safe and suitable for HGV traffic. Construction of the new quarry access road has progressed substantially, with an anticipated completion date for the start of September 2026. The public bridleway remains open and operational, with appropriate signage, fencing and safety measures in place to segregate public access from construction activities.
Utility infrastructure works have also progressed. The diversion of the overhead electricity line crossing phase 1 of the site is expected to begin shortly. This project is being undertaken with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to relocate the cable around the perimeter of the site, facilitating future quarry operations. SSEN will also be installing a separate supply cable into the southern end of the site as soon as the relevant documentation has been agreed.
Attention has increasingly turned towards preparation of the Phase 1 extraction area in the north-east of the site. This has included ongoing site establishment works and the discharge of planning conditions associated with the commencement of extraction activities. Overburden removal has begun, focusing on the areas identified as having a high density of archaeological features, allowing investigations to be completed well in advance of future extraction activities. The topsoil is being stored in screening bunds around the perimeter of the site to effectively reduce any potential visual impacts or noise associated with the quarry operation.
In parallel with these activities, detailed planning for the processing plant, internal haul roads, water management infrastructure, and other operational facilities has continued. These elements are essential to ensuring the quarry can operate efficiently.
HQP remains committed to maintaining open communication with local residents, businesses and stakeholders. The Airfield Quarry Liaison Group has now been established and provides a forum for sharing project updates, discussing site activities and addressing any questions or concerns raised by the local community. Further meetings will continue to be held periodically as the development progresses.
